College Zoom was built on one question: why do some underdogs consistently beat more qualified applicants at elite colleges? After 17 years studying that question, we have an answer — and a system built around it.
Every admissions cycle, students with lower grades, average test scores, and no outwardly special hooks get into top colleges over peers with stronger academic qualifications. Admissions directors describe them as "too good of a fit to turn away."
David Reynaldo spent years studying those students — not the valedictorians, but the underdogs who won anyway. What he found wasn't luck. It was a pattern. A set of qualities that elite colleges' internal rubrics consistently reward, regardless of GPA or test scores.
That research led to funding from the University of Southern California in 2012, programming for public school counselors, and eventually the College-Specific Gap Analysis™ — a system that applies those same tactics to every student College Zoom works with.
Success rate placing students into one of their top 3 self-chosen colleges — including students in the 25th–50th academic percentile for their desired schools.
Rejection letters reversed on appeal since 2020 — at USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and more.
Years refining the methodology, originally funded by USC and continuously updated through active school and institutional partnerships.
Our methodology is the only one in college admissions originally funded by a major university. USC invited us to develop programming for school counselors and lead workshops at their annual counselors conference.
Years before Harvard's Turning the Tide report in 2016, we were already applying its core principles. A decade before the 2023 Supreme Court affirmative action ruling, we were helping Asian and minority students succeed with lived-experience essays over cultural-identity ones.
We successfully petitioned the University of California to allow bullet-point formatting in its activity summary — a change that now benefits every applicant to the UC system. We understand admissions at the policy and leverage level most consultants never reach.
"My expectations were very low. I said, really, what are you going to do that the college counselor at my daughter's private high school could not? But you presented a novel point of view — one that had not occurred to the other professionals. Then you accomplished two years worth of therapy in an hour, pulling everything out of her and getting it onto the page."Gita Rosenwald — Daughter rescued from Vassar College's waitlist, Class of 2016 (5% waitlist admit rate)
Every student works directly with David and a specialized in-house team. No handoffs, no rotating consultants, no junior staff pulled in too many directions.
In 2009, David envisioned a team of former elite admissions officers. He quickly learned that admissions office experience doesn't equate to mentoring talent, persuasive writing ability, or a magnetic personality. In 17 years of hiring cycles, not one former admissions officer has passed our first-round interview.
Instead, College Zoom fosters close relationships with admissions officers, directors, and deans through NACAC and WACAC for macro insights — and deploys proven mentoring talent for the day-to-day work where it matters most.
"Success is 10% inspiration, 90% execution. We nail both."
— David Reynaldo, Founder
